Week 1 - Intro

Disclaimer: I am not very confident when it comes to writing and to be honest I find it very intimidating especially after re-joining uni after a 3 year gap (I have been working full time and still am). 

Exercise 1

Describing a Lemon in 10 words

Types of Descriptive Language (re-learning):

Adjective: A word naming an attribute of a noun
Adverb: A word that modifies the verb, adjective or other adverb
Verb: A word used to describe an action, state or occurrence
Metaphor: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to but not literally
Simile: A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing to another
Personification: The attribution of a personal nature or characteristics to something non-human



Exercise 2

Writing a sentence on a piece of chocolate given in class


A little pocket of sweetness has added some substance to my empty vessel.













Exercise 3

Writing to a situation - Serviettes placed around the room

Words to describe the serviette

- White
- Textured
- Thin
- Hanging
- Unfolded
- Quadrant
- Wrinkled
- Plain
- Opaque
- Used/unused

This thin, unfolded layer of textured white is hanging harmlessly from two points. It has interrupted my view of the outside leaving on silhouettes to observe.


Time, Sense & Body - Reaching out and communicating your relationship with something using all your senses instead of just sight.

Writing a thick description on an object without naming it (Tree)

Alive for decades, witnessing time pass by still set in its place. Withstanding and adapting to all the seasons with many faces. Towering over providing a home to some and shade to some. As I observe, I wonder how many things it has seen and experienced. Has it always been like this? Chipped layers of mouldy bark exposing fragments of its smooth insides. Bare vein like ends expanding outwards in different directions leaving an overcast imprint on the soil beneath me.

  The Hybrid Form Class exercise of reviewing Hybrid forms of writing. 'Dear Rosa' In this piece you can see forms of: - descriptive  - narrative - list/operational - manifesto I was amazed that so much fit into a little match box and how we perceive objects on a daily basis. If I was on the receiving end of this letter I don't think I would remember who you were unless you created some sort of scene at the time. Structure - write about the aesthetic exterior - write about each object (descriptive) then a narrative.

Working title: Creating my own borders: Identity & Clothing   Being a first generation born Indian-Kiwi woman I have always felt like I didn’t completely fit in to my surroundings. Growing up in two different cultures has led me to struggle within myself but has also shown me a new perception of who I am and can become. There have been instances when I would try to ‘fit in’ but it would always seem as if I was losing a part of my true self and essence. Is it the fact that I thought wearing traditional Indian clothes at events would leave a good imprint on the community and how they perceived me as a person knowing that this wasn’t my true self? Or I started listening to Western music just to be able to talk about it with my classmates knowing that I enjoyed Indian and Punjabi music to a much deeper level? Research for writing

I am still unsure of where this writing will lead me.
