Week 3

 The Manifesto & The Speech

Manifestos

It is where you declare your core values, your vision and goals publicly. It creates direction, focus and purpose

It is your subjectivity and engagement within the world. They can be constructed in different ways.

Speeches

A formal address or discourse delivered to an audience. It can be persuasive, argumentative and factual. Pretty much a manifesto but delivered verbally.

Exercise 1:

Review a manifesto:

An Incomplete Manifesto for Growth

It is a list in itself which is like a guide. Each paragraph is a completely new point using persuasive and argumentative points. Some paragraphs/points are followed with emotive language. It is aimed at the audience/everyone. Throughout this manifesto there is a trend - Key point, argument/advocating then potentially an emotive response.

While reading the manifesto, it made me feel like I should be doing certain things that I may not want to. I was persuaded at the beginning but as it progressed further I started to realise not all these things can lead to growth but you can certainly try.

Exercise 2:

Choosing a video/speech I am passionate about and reviewing it.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's full response to Ted Yoho

Observations:

- When making her points she slowed down and emphasised each word
- The way she uses her hands and is fiddling at the beginning but then uses stronger hand gestures when making her points valid
- Her eyes and posture is different as opposed to all her other videos
- Her head nodding while she lists some points (1.41) they become a tad more aggressive when she talks about how her parents raised her (6.16)
- She pauses in between to let her points be heard and reflected on
- Her red blazer is a statement in itself

Her speech begins with her explaining the situation which then positions her values and morals as a congress woman as well as just a woman and women everywhere.
She progresses into talking about her past experiences and why she is used to this sort of behaviour which leads her into saying that "this is the actual problem."

Through her own experience she's addressed an issue that almost every woman may experience at any point in their life. She speaks about what actually makes a decent man and the steps to do so. At this point she slows down again and concludes with how she has gratitude towards Ted.

Why I chose this:

I chose this because there have been times I have experienced the same but never stood up for myself. The fact that she addressed this with such grace and no pettiness made me feel empowered. You don't need to use abusive language or 'point your finger' to make a literal point. Her emotion was shown through her posture, eyes and hand gestures. When you come from a culture that does have male dominance and work in places with a 'boys club' you do tend to experience similar events. It makes you think about society, accountability and how your parents didn't raise you to take abuse.

ACTS

Act 1

Writing my own manifesto (unedited)

Throughout the time I've been going out with my friends clubbing and drinking there is definitely a very basic impression of how you should dress. All I ever see is girls wearing clothes from Glassons with their Vans and guys in their tees and flannels. It always makes me wonder, shouldn't there be some sort of effort being put in when going out? If you were to do the same thing in, let's say the Gold Coast, pretty much everyone is dressed up and 'extra.' It's not even just about dressing up but all they layers that come with it. A few of these things are individuality, confidence, self - empowerment. I certainly know I feel all these things when I've made an effort to dress up when going out. You work/study the whole week, pretty much looking homeless or wearing a uniform so why not make use of a time where you can express yourself openly?  I just wish that people would dress up more to create a new atmosphere especially on Courtney Place in Wellington. I know Wellington tends to have a go with the flow or chill vibe but as the capital city I feel it needs to step up. You don't need to spend big money because there are so many resources available but people just need to actually make the effort. I say enough of this Glassons and Hallensteins trend, it's time for us to be boujee.

Act 2

Refining what I've written

Imagine going to the clubs and as soon as you get there, all you see are girls wearing their Glassons outfits with their Vans. Have you ever thought how did we become so basic as a region even a country? It always makes me wonder, shouldn't there be more of an effort being put in on a night out? I know I always feel amazing when I dress up because potentially that is the only time I can. Working/studying at least 5 days a week can take a lot out of you especially your individuality. There are certain things you can or can't wear depending on the situation so why not go out and express yourself where people can't judge? There are so many layers that come with dressing up. Personally, I feel that making an effort and dressing up gives me way more confidence and a sense of self-empowerment and individuality. Even the whole atmosphere changes. Are we really going to let the Glassons girl meme stick or are we gonna match up to our neighbouring country and get it together? I know I do.
